Half of the players who buy it never get past the starter missions — yet the same group also posts deep-dive guides for modding mechs weeks later. The longer the session, the sharper the contrast between breathtaking freedom and jarring instability.

What it's about: Commander, customize and build your Mechanical Assault Skeleton Suit (M.A.S.S.) and lead the fight against an alien invasion bent on exterminating the human race. The fate of humanity is in your hands.

« I am only recommending this game to those who like building model kits and mech customization. The combat is not good and very janky but the amount of customization you can make in a mech is very satisfying. »

« Lots of fun. A great blend of Gundam and Pacific Rim. My only real criticism is that the painting needs another pass. It can be very specific, and that's great, however doing a quick paint job can be way to time consuming. »

« This mecha is really good both in feeling and mechanics, GREAT customization I've defiantly spent close to an hour just changing my mech's color's. Best part is its not super easy or Fromsoft difficult. Curious were they will take this. »

« a Good game if you want to make your own mech and it is also good for killing time. All though they should give the players be able to make backpack weapons. »

« At this point I'm pretty sure this game will never be finished. Another lesson in "never buy an Early Access game". Buy Armored Core 6 and never look back. »

« Creation controls too fiddly, combat too clunky, badly optimized for controller. »

« On comprend absolument rien....faire son robot est BEAUCOUP TROP complex. Pas de trad fr pour le moment ce qui rend encore + dur. Honnêtement faire aussi complexe donne juste pas envie de faire son robot. »

« The developers have not sent out physical backer rewards after the full 1.0 release, as they had promised, and have ignored requests for updates. »

Strengths

  • Players who push through the opening 10 hours keep coming back: 63% of the 10-25h group rate the game positively, praising the blend of base-building and mech customization.
  • Creative players unlock joy after initial friction: 13 positive mentions out of 43 reference the sheer breadth of customization options once the UI is mastered.
  • Those who reach 25+ hours call the sandbox the real star: 69% positive feedback in that bracket highlights endless mission replayability and emergent storytelling.

Weaknesses

  • Instability cripples the experience for early dropouts: every one of the 9 performance-related negative reviews describes crashes, saves lost mid-build, or pathfinding bugs.
  • UI and controls frustrate despite deep customization: 17 negative mentions out of 18 rail against menu navigation that feels retro and counter-intuitive.
  • First impressions skew negative: only 31% of players quitting under two hours rate the game favorably, citing unclear objectives and repetitive tutorials.

Who is it for?

Mech tinkerers willing to weather a rocky launch will find a sandbox that rewards patient exploration, but anyone expecting a smooth narrative or bug-free release should wait for updates.

Is M.A.S.S. Builder worth it in 2026?

It depends — the community is divided: 85% of 4,100 Steam reviews are positive (player score 54/100). Most-praised strength: Players who push through the opening 10 hours keep coming back. Current price: 24,50€.

Verdict

M.A.S.S. Builder’s 85% Steam score hides a startling gap: the game either clicks instantly or feels like a frustrating early-access draft. The moment you cross the 10-hour mark, the brilliant emergent gameplay starts to shine through the chaos.
